Remote sensing of the earth's atmosphere, land surface and ecosystems from aircraft and satellites using optical imaging, spectrometer and LiDAR technologies, and the techniques for processing these data have matured significantly in the past decade. These advanced sensors are now capable of providing quantitative measurements of a wide range of environmental variables at local, regional and global scales.
As a result, remote sensing has become a critical observational tool for investigating earth system processes and monitoring changes in these processes over time.
